There is something about a small desk that appeals to me. Okay it's not just something random, it is something specific. With a small desk, I am less apt to have the desktop completely cluttered. This is odd because common sense would suggest that a smaller space would be more cluttered. Maybe this is because of my manner of cluttering. I don't cover the desktop with envelopes and paper and larger items. I keep pens, paper clips and elastics and tiny things like that piling up on the desk.
A small desk doesn't create the kind of space that these small things need. But that is just me. On a desk, one pen would not make it messy looking, but a dozen pens might. In any case, because of my affection for a small desk, I have quite an eye for this piece of furniture. Rather than telling you about the choices available and talking about the types of wood or other materials that you should look for in a desk, let me tell you instead about a couple of things I have observed that just don't work.
There is a caveat I should mention here and that is these observations reflect my own taste. You might not agree with me. There are so many furniture styles and so many reproductions that it is possible to get a lovely faux Queen Anne desk to use one example. The Queen Anne style has exquisite long slender curved legs.
The problem I saw with one of these was that the desk was really faux. It was inexpensive and looked marvellous and if all you wanted to use it for was as a decoration, it worked beautifully. But because it was just for decorative purposes, this desk was useless as a functioning desk. It could not support a laptop. Well, it could if it was a small laptop and it was not being used. But the minute you started typing on it, the whole desk wobbled.
Another problem I witnessed was with an antique small desk. It was glorious in appearance and made a perfect accessory to the room it was in. But it was completely unusable as a desk because of the quality of its antiquity. No one could relax at this desk enough to use it as a functioning piece of furniture. What if you scratched it?
In both these cases, they were lovely to look at but disastrous to use. If you do buy such a desk, think about its role in your life. Do you want to look at it or use it?
A small desk is not just eye candy. The truth of the matter is that any of the wonderful small desks in the market will save you space and money! |
