There's always a sense of excitement in the air at this time of the year. Watching everything spring back to life makes us feel exhilarated, while the rising temperatures herald the return of outdoor living; and a lot of our enjoyment of that lifestyle comes from trees. After all, it would be unimaginable to have to sit on our outdoor furniture, trying to revel in the beauty of nature, without the heavenly sights, sounds, scents, and shade that trees provide.
Beyond the pleasure that they bring to our outdoor events, trees play crucial roles in our very existence, and, in fact, in the life of our planet. Therefore, it's great that we have Arbor Day, which reminds us of the importance of taking care of the trees that we have, and encourages us to plant new ones. Although it's observed on varying dates, in different states, May is a great month for planting trees in many places across the country.
If you're going to plant a tree, however, there are some things to keep in mind, in order to ensure that it grows up strong and healthy. To begin with, get one that's adapted to your climate; otherwise, serious problems can arise. Be certain to pick a site that is large enough to accommodate the tree when it's full-grown. You should also find out if the tree will produce any nuisance fruit, and, if so, decide whether or not you're willing to deal with it. While you're asking all of these questions at the nursery, see if there are any disease-resistant varieties of the tree that you're interested in planting.
Lift the tree by the root ball, or container, rather than the trunk. Keep it well-watered, and in the shade, until you are ready to plant it; and, before you do, take off wires, cords, labels, and anything else that is tied to the tree, as these things can end up girdling the areas to which they are attached.
Make the hole deep enough to plant the tree at the same level that it was at the nursery, and about three times as wide as the root ball. Do not enrich the soil by filling the hole with soft compost. This may make the roots so comfortable, that they will not spread into surrounding areas. If they fail to do that, they won't become firmly anchored, and may be easily toppled by strong winds. Refill the hole with the same soil that you removed from it.
Water the tree thoroughly after it is planted, then once a week, for the first season, unless your area gets sufficient rainfall to keep it adequately hydrated. Apply mulch around the tree, two to four inches deep, covering an area that's two to three times the diameter of the root ball.
Planting a tree is one of the best ways to add to the beauty of your landscape; and after you're done, you can enhance the look of your porch, patio, or backyard, with some new outdoor furniture, you'll find a fantastic selection of wood, metal, and synthetic outdoor furniture, in styles and colors to complement any décor. Better yet, you'll be dealing with a company that's committed to providing environmentally-friendly products. Their polywood furniture is made from recycled plastic, while all of the wood that's used to construct their furniture comes from suppliers who adhere to sustainable practices, planting five trees for every one that they cut down.
