A Guide to Mattress Size - What You Should Know Before Buying

There is no one mattress size so shopping for the right mattress will entail careful thought. Size is one of the many things that you need to consider when buying an appropriate mattress. Your choice of which one to install in your bedrooms will depend on your specific needs as well as your sleeping concerns.

There are four basic mattress categories based on the size: twin, double, queen and king. More than getting the right mattress to suit your needs, it's important to familiarize yourself with sizes because your choice of beddings will depend on them. There's nothing worse than getting the wrong sheets or pillows for your mattress.

Twin
Also known as 'single' this mattress size is 39 inches wide and 75 inches long. It is commonly used for children's rooms and as a daybed. For college dorm rooms, a longer version of the twin is preferred logically because of the type of people who sleep on them. The good thing about the twin is that it is easier to move around as it doesn't take so much space. The twin extra long, which is 39 inches wide and 80 inches long, is still an ideal choice for teenagers and adults. The only problem is that finding sheets for this mattress can be a bit difficult these days.

Double
The double mattress is also called 'full' and is 54 inches wide and 75 inches long. This mattress size is a good choice for teenagers and adults who live alone. The sheets for a double mattress are relatively more affordable so it's also ideal for budget conscious people. If you live in a really small studio apartment, this is also a good choice as it doesn't take up much space. The only problem is that it may not be long enough to accommodate taller people.

Queen
For those who are looking for more sleeping space, the queen is a mattress size that will probably work for them. This is one of the ideal choices for couples who have to share the same bed but still want to maintain their own personal space. At 60" x 80", the queen is 6 inches wider and 8 inches longer than the standard full mattress. For some people, though, the queen may not offer ample space for two people. It is a good choice for guest rooms, and master bedrooms that are smaller.

King
Aptly named, the king mattress is literally the king of mattresses as it is the biggest one available in the market - custom-made products aside, of course. This one is 76 inches wide and 80 inches long so it offers more sleeping space for two adults. It comes in another size - the California King - which is longer than it is wide as compared to the standard king. The California king is 72 inches wide and 84 inches long making it a good choice for taller adults.

While the king-sized bed is a good choice in terms of comfort, its large size can limit its mobility. If you're one to move around quite a bit, you will probably be better off with a smaller mattress. Bedding for this size can also be more expensive.

At the end of the day, your choice for mattress size will still be dependent on your budget and your comfort. Logically, smaller mattresses will cost cheaper than the bigger ones. Just make sure that you buy a mattress from a known manufacturer to ensure durability.
