Now that spring has finally arrived, it is a good time to take inventory of your current office furniture situation. Since this can be an overwhelming task, we will start with probably the most important piece of office furniture - your office chairs.
Has Your Office Chair Lost Its Loving Feeling?
Start by evaluating the office chair that you currently use (and then you can have your team evaluate theirs at a later time). This may seem very basic, but it is time to be truthful with yourself. Is keeping this old chair worth the physical ailments that its causing?
One of the most common complaints about chairs is back problems.
Take a moment to think about the way you sit in your office chair. Questions to consider:
- Does your office chair offer the proper support to your back or are you having minor to severe back pain at work? (The effects of a poorly supported back are long lasting and will affect you in your daily life outside of sitting at your office desk.)
- Does the seat of the desk chair offer you proper support or has the padding given away and the edge of the chair worn down to a sloping degree? (The effects of a chair that offers no support to your seat can include pain in your back, thighs, and knees. Poor posture can even cause painful and unsightly varicose veins to appear on your legs.)
- Has the chair lost its support tension to the point that your elbows fall well below your computer keyboard? (At this point you are heading for a bad case of carpal tunnel. Carpal tunnel can become so severe that it requires surgery to fix. No one wants to endure the pain and cost of an unnecessary surgical procedure!)
Those questions pose major health concerns that are associated with a worn out desk chair. When the quality and effectiveness of your office chair have severely dwindled, it is time to consider investing in a new chair.
What Other Issues Might Warrant A New Chair?
Aside, from the much bigger issue of physical problems that a poor office chair can cause, also take a look at the physical condition of the chair. A chair that has mechanical issues, broken bolts or base, tattered and torn fabric or leather, wobbly back, broken pieces, and dirty is past its prime. It may be time to either attempt to repair the chair, recycle it, or send it to the office furniture graveyard. In cases where the chair is still under warranty, you may be able to salvage it through repair parts (look at your manufacturer or purchaser warranty for more information about repairing parts of the chair).
New Chair Technology
As furniture technology has improved through the years, the overall comfort and functionality of the chair has improved as well. The seat, headrest, backrest, lumbar support, and armrests are designed to better conform to your body. Functionality has also improved with a large number of chairs offering mechanism and tilt controls. Most of the office chairs being made and sold today have ergonomic considerations to allow you to combine proper health considerations with a sense of personal comfort to help enrich your seated work experience.
